MorseLife Seniors Breaking Down Myths of Aging – Keeping Seniors Fit and Healthy Through Fitness Classes and Challenges
West Palm Beach, FL, June 1, 2018 – Have you completed your 10,000 steps today as part of your ongoing commitment to fitness? If you are a resident of the senior residences on the MorseLife Health System campus, you can work toward that daily through a wealth of exercise classes and challenges to keep you fit and healthy.
According to the National Council on Aging, seniors who exercise regularly stay independent longer while also lowering their risk of developing health issues, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and depression. On the MorseLife campus, the Levin Tower independent living residence and The Tradition at MorseLife assisted living residence offer a daily schedule of fitness and wellness programs focusing upon range of motion, cardiovascular and muscle endurance, balance and mobility, yoga and stress management.
Stephanie Frazier, Executive Director of The Tradition at MorseLife, noted her team recently organized a month-long fitness challenge throughout May to motivate them to regularly attend exercise classes and ultimately help them improve their social, mental and physical health. “Our participants have pedometers to track their steps and fitness milestones every day,” she said. “For the May fitness challenge, the majority of our residents attending our classes and walking programs clocked in nearly 10,000 steps daily on average, an inspiring feat given our average age here is 89.”
Tradition resident Carolyn Harris notes that apart from participating in the challenge, she keeps fit regularly through walking on the MorseLife campus, swimming in the pool, and taking dance classes. “With so many more of my friends and neighbors now participating in our classes and programs, there is an ongoing commitment among all of us keep moving!” she said. “We love the classes and in fact, all opportunities we have to stay fit.” On National Senior Health and Fitness Day on May 30th, fitness challenge participants received awards for their milestones and were treated to a program on relaxation techniques, health screenings and heart-healthy snacks.
“Our residents really are defying myths of aging by maintaining active and healthier lifestyles in their later years, and we are pleased to offer the classes to keep them fit and active,” Ms. Frazier said. “One case in point – a resident who just celebrated her 107th birthday, was power walking throughout our campus until her 104th birthday – a real inspiration and motivation for all of us to keep moving!”
