Since 2019, MorseLife has led the way in senior care innovation by offering cannabinoid-based therapies when they became Florida’s first senior living provider to introduce medical marijuana and CBD treatments. These therapies have significantly helped residents manage chronic pain, anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances.

Led by Melanie Bone, M.D., FACOG, Director of Cannabinoid-Based Therapies at MorseLife Health System, the medical team is at the forefront of this groundbreaking approach. Dr. Bone consults with patients to determine the proper dosage, tolerance level and best method for administering the treatment. This varies patient-to-patient and is reevaluated and adjusted as necessary.

Prior to beginning cannabinoid-based therapy, the education component is essential so patients, their families and doctors can assess the pros and cons to make an informed decision. That’s why events such as National Hemp Day are important to showcase options and benefits. Residents can explore their curiosities and overcome the stigmas and fears associated with using medical cannabis.

Dr. Bone has been a Certified Cannabis Physician in Florida since 2016 and joined the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) faculty as a clinical affiliate assistant professor in 2021, where she teaches medical students about cannabis.

“Cannabis doesn’t provide a cure. It doesn’t make a diagnosis go away after taking the medication for a period of time. Cannabis provides a treatment to alleviate and reduce symptoms of conditions such as insomnia, chronic pain and anxiety,” Dr. Bone said. “Cannabis offers a fantastic alternative to addictive opioids and antidepressants, all while increasing our residents’ quality of life.”

MorseLife’s cannabinoid therapies are just one example of how the health system is redefining senior care, helping residents live with comfort, dignity and improved quality of life.

November is recognized as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, making it an important time to raise awareness about hospice and palliative care. At MorseLife, we understand that discussions about hospice care can often feel overwhelming. Many families grapple with misinformation or a lack of understanding about what hospice entails. In times of serious illness, figuring out the right type of care for a loved one can be daunting, leaving families feeling disorganized and uncertain about the next steps.

While this phase of life can be intensely challenging, hospice care can be about much more than physical comfort and medical support. It’s also a time to reflect, celebrate, and preserve the moments that define a life. Exceptional hospice care should include top-notch medical support and life-enriching services for patients and their families, such as specialty therapies, grief support, and emotional and spiritual guidance.

At MorseLife Hospice, we are committed to providing patients in Palm Beach County with the highest standard of care and comfort, valuing the dignity and legacy of each individual and their families. With our 40-year history of compassionate service to the community, MorseLife has reshaped the standard of excellence for end-of-life care, offering innovative and life-enriching programs and a unique approach to personalized hospice care.

A Holistic Approach

The best care requires an interdisciplinary team of professionals who can work together seamlessly on a patient’s behalf. Quality hospice programs will employ physicians, nurses, hospice aides, medical social workers, spiritual care counselors, and bereavement coordinators who work together to improve each patient’s symptoms and quality of life.

MorseLife offers various traditional palliative care services, such as pain management and care coordination, led by highly skilled healthcare teams. It also offers unique signature programs like the Mitzvah Sensory Care program, rooted in the Jewish tradition of Bikur Cholim, which means “to visit and extend aid to the sick.” This program incorporates holistic sensory techniques to soothe the whole person. Patients engage in meditation and music experiences and receive soothing grooming and massage with scented oils and a compassionate touch.

Capturing Memories and Recording Legacies

Another important aspect of hospice is helping families create lasting memories and meaningful connections.

The ‘Cherishing Life’s Journey’ program was recently introduced at MorseLife, allowing patients to honor their memories and share their legacies with loved ones. Through tailored programs, we help patients capture their unique stories in various ways, from creating personalized keepsakes to recording life stories and fulfilling long-held wishes with virtual reality.

One of these is My Treasure Chest, where patients create cards, videos, and gifts for future milestones like birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries, ensuring their presence is felt in the hearts of their loved ones even after they’re gone. Patients can also create their own music or music timelines to share with loved ones, develop an on-screen legacy with photos and videos, or even pen their autobiographies with the caring support of the hospice team.

Support for Families

Families and patients need a great deal of support during this difficult time. Patients don’t want to feel alone, while families want to be included in the caregiving process and may need someone to turn to when their emotions become overwhelming.

MorseLife engages with family through a mobile communication app to support this connection. The app keeps families informed with real-time updates on their loved one’s care.

Comprehensive hospice programs, such as MorseLife Hospice, offer a range of bereavement counseling services, from one-on-one counseling to support groups, helping individuals make emotional and psychological adjustments.

When you’re choosing a senior living community, there are many things you want and need. After all, this will be the place you or a loved one will soon call home.

One often overlooked aspect of senior living communities is the safety and security they offer. This provides greater ease and peace of mind not only for residents, but for their loved ones.

Senior living safety and security are a major focus in many communities.

At MorseLife, we believe seniors deserve to feel protected, supported, and at ease. That’s why we take senior living safety and security to heart in our communities.

With state-of-the-art security systems, highly trained staff, unobtrusive monitoring, and continuous support—our community members rest easy, knowing they never need worry about their safety on our campus.

We also offer free resources to support seniors and their loved ones. Knowledge is powerful and can positively contribute to feelings of safety and security.

Why senior living safety is important

Feeling safe is important to most people. But what we require to nurture a sense of safety and security may evolve as we age. Many seniors need more daily support and assistance to achieve the security they deserve for quality of life.

Statistically, seniors are at increased risk of serious injuries from falls. Older adults also experience falls more often than younger adults. This may be due to changes in physical abilities, eyesight, or balance.

The good news is most falls in older adults are preventable. This is a major reason senior living communities take fall prevention seriously and provide ways to reduce fall risks in residents, like safety modifications and staff training.

Seniors also have other safety and security concerns. These may include managing their daily medications, feeling safe in their own home, worries about forgetfulness, and concerns about venturing into their larger community.

Thankfully, caring for the comprehensive safety needs of residents is foundational in the offerings of senior living communities. Safety and security are important for residents at all levels of senior living and care.

Independent Living residents are looking for a community and campus they feel safe to navigate freely, both day and night. They want security features like smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, security guards, and a safe campus environment that protects them and their belongings.

Assisted Living residents want the same things as Independent Living residents, but they also require the security of easily accessible assistance and support from trained caregivers and healthcare professionals. They require the safety of professional medication management, and the security of knowing someone is always close by to assist them with completing their activities of daily living.

Memory Care community members typically require consistent support and care to ensure their safety and security. Quality Memory Care communities provide around the clock care and treat residents with respect and personalized support. Memory Care residents often require assistance with most daily tasks, and benefit from environments that feel home-like to promote calm and a sense of familiarity. Memory Care residents may also have confusion, forgetfulness, and wandering behaviors, so security features to ensure their safety are vital in this setting.

Now that you know why senior living safety measures are important at each level of senior living and care, let’s review some security features you’re likely to encounter in your senior living search.

What senior living safety accommodations can we expect from our community?

Senior living communities offer a variety of safety and security features to their residents.

You can generally expect your senior living community to offer some type of emergency call system, a secure campus, and access to healthcare and medical professionals.

Some communities include personal safety features, such as visual and auditory monitoring systems for residents with cognitive challenges or physical issues.

This might include pressure sensors for residents who are unsafe to stand unassisted, or bed alarms to notify staff if a resident has gotten out of bed and may need support from trained staff to remain safe and steady.

Many communities also offer residents easily accessible ways to contact staff for assistance as needed. This often means wearable devices like call pendants and bracelets that residents can press to send a signal to staff that immediate assistance is required.

Safety and security measures in senior living can also be personalized for a resident’s unique risks and needs. This may mean a doctor writes an order for a resident to be evaluated and treated by a skilled therapist.

Professionals like physical and occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists often work in senior living communities. They are trained to assess and treat a wide range of issues that affect seniors.

Safety and security modifications can be implemented for a resident’s safety, based on a therapist’s recommendations.

These senior living safety measures can include:

A physical therapist ordering a walker for a patient who needs more safety and stability to safely ambulate within the community

An occupational therapist ordering and fitting a wrist brace for a patient in need, or work on improving their range of motion with exercises

A speech and language pathologist modifying a person’s diet if they’re unsafe to consume regular foods and liquids without risks for choking or aspiration. They may develop and train a resident and staff in the use of assistive communication devices if a resident needs support to effectively communicate their wants and needs

These are just some of the ways skilled rehabilitation therapists support senior living residents’ safety and security.

If you’re interested in receiving skilled therapy services for yourself or a loved one in senior living, it’s wise to reach out directly to your community to see what they offer.

If you’re a MorseLife community member and are ever in need of short-term rehabilitation services following a hospitalization, illness, or injury, you can access top-quality recovery services and care right on our MorseLife campus in our exceptional short-term rehab center.

Our residents at every level of living can also receive skilled therapy services on an outpatient basis, thanks to our full continuum of care. This ensures that you can feel your best and live your healthiest, most active life.

Because MorseLife means more life!

MorseLife’s approach to senior living safety in our communities

Everyone deserves to enjoy life in safety and security. Your definitions of these terms may change or expand as you age.

For example: younger adults may conceptualize safety and security to involve home safety measures and devices like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and security systems to deter intruders.

Older adults with daily needs may include things like accessibility features and modifications and increased personal assistance to this list.

This can include things like:

Grab bars in the bathroom

Nonslip rugs

A shower seat

Elevated commode with handrails

Lowered bed to reduce risks of injury from a fall

It can also involve support like:

A walker, wheelchair, or cane

Personal assistance with activities of daily living (such as a caregiver to help them get dressed, bathe, and safely use the toilet)

A call bell, pendant, or wrist device to alert caregivers when assistance is needed

Older adults may have increased needs when it comes to fulfilling their safety and security requirements. And that’s exactly what we offer, here at MorseLife.

We deliver peace of mind to the Independent Living resident who recently lost her husband and is concerned she may need some extra support in the evenings to feel safe in her apartment alone…

We sit with the Assisted Living resident who feels unsure about taking his daily medications safely. We help by showing him safe swallowing strategies, or offering to put his pills in something like applesauce or pudding to help them go down easier…

We offer a helping hand to guide the Memory Care resident to a group activity we know she’ll enjoy, ensuring she gets there safely and can participate at her own ability level…

We notice when a resident seems less steady on his feet when walking and may benefit from a consultation with one of our therapists to help him stay safe and maintain his independence…

We connect with the family of a resident who may need some extra reminders to help her remember not to try to get up from her bed or chair without assistance, so she’s not at risk of falling but also feels her personal wishes are honored…

Each day, we ensure all our community members at every level of living and care feel supported and cared for—with respect and compassion.

While all our communities have state-of-the-art safety and security features, we also believe in personalizing our safety and security offerings for each resident. At MorseLife, we take both a macro and micro approach to safety in our community.

Loved ones of our Assisted Living and Memory Care residents savor the peace of mind that comes with knowing we provide customized, considerate, comprehensive care, around the clock. Our Assisted Living and Memory Care residents know they are safe, supported, and valued at all times and that help is always available to them.

Our Independent Living residents enjoy freedom from worry and the ability to create a lifestyle of ease that fits who they are now. We are here to uplift and empower them to live life on their terms. It’s amazing what active older adults can do when they’re freed from the concerns, stress, and demands that sapped their energy and drained their time when they were aging in place at home.

MorseLife is more than just a collection of top-quality senior living communities. We also offer a full continuum of care.

Through MorseLife Health System, you can access senior health, wellness, and care services like:

Enjoying a robust social life is one of life’s great joys. Still, many deprioritize this aspect of life as they grow older, spending more time alone and less with others. Sometimes, this is a conscious choice. Other times, it’s the result of access issues and limitations that affect a person’s ability to choose when and how they engage socially.

Humans are social creatures, and most of us crave a life full of connections and companions. From family to friends, socialization makes us feel like part of a community.

But did you know that maintaining a strong social life offers us significant and measurable health benefits? It’s true!

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. Those with less social engagement are at greater risk for health issues, because of their lack of connection to others.

We want you to understand the science behind these surprising facts, in addition to learning why social involvement is so vital to overall quality of life.

Senior health and wellness are our top priority, here at MorseLife. That’s why we want to deliver you all the info you need to understand the importance of senior social life.

Let’s start by reviewing some important facts about the importance of social life for senior health.

You may be surprised to learn that loneliness in seniors is considered an epidemic in this country.

A study from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) found that around a quarter of Americans aged 65 and over meet the criteria for social isolation.

And loneliness and depression aren’t the only consequence of being socially isolated.

Lacking a social life and feeling chronically disconnected from a community to call your own can have massive impacts on both your physical and mental health as a senior.

Research reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows social isolation can also lead to serious health issues in seniors.

This includes increased risks for serious health consequences like:

Dementia

Heart attacks

Strokes

Hospitalizations

Even premature death

Those are some pretty serious senior health issues!

Thankfully, there are many ways to combat social isolation and its related risks as you age.

Joining a senior living community can be a great way to overcome social isolation, loneliness, and their associated risks.

Let’s explore why this is so.

How senior living combats social isolation and enhances senior health and well-being

Senior living has much to offer seniors who are looking for a carefree lifestyle, full of services and amenities. It’s also a great option for those in need of extra daily support and care to enjoy life in comfort and security.

But senior living also offers a wealth of chances to form social bonds and community connections. These enhanced social opportunities also provide health benefits for seniors, who experience less isolation and loneliness as a result.

But you don’t just have to take our word for it. The science backs us up:

Social interactions with friends and same-aged peers have been shown to enhance seniors’ quality of life, improve their morale, and reduce their feelings of loneliness.

Having quality social opportunities has also been shown to be vital for seniors.

This study found social interactions with friends and family to correlate to enhanced psychological well-being in seniors and, indeed, all ages of adults.

And this one discovered seniors’ psychological well-being is positively influenced by how enjoyable their social interactions are, how much control they have over interactions, how responsive others are to their needs, and their level of social activity.

One need not look far or dig deep to find the data and statistics to back up claims that older adults strongly benefit from enhanced positive social interactions and opportunities.

And, as the data has shown us, seniors stand to experience both mental and physical health benefits as a result.

Using the statistics on social isolation and its health risks in this demographic, we can determine the opposite is also true: seniors who have a more robust social life are less at risk for the health issues related to social isolation.

Senior living is designed to offer residents a lively social schedule. But senior living at MorseLife takes social connection opportunities to the next level.

Let’s explore how MorseLife empowers residents to achieve their best quality of life, with an array of signature programs, activities, services, and amenities.

As Rosh Hashanah draws near, MorseLife is seeking volunteers to help deliver meals to Jewish seniors throughout Palm Beach County. The Mitzvah Meal Program, a longstanding MorseLife tradition, ensures that homebound seniors receive a lovingly prepared holiday meal delivered right to their door on September 30th.

The meal, which includes wine, challah, soup, honey, apples, and honey cake, not only nourishes the body but also serves as a symbol of community and connection for seniors. Those wishing to receive a meal must register by calling 561.282.5388 by September 16th.

According to Paola Pouponneau-Nisbett, Senior Vice President of MorseLife Home and Community-Based Programs, “This program serves as a vital link to the community for homebound seniors, offering them warmth, comfort and a sense of belonging during the High Holidays.”

One of MorseLife’s most dedicated volunteers, Kenny Tillman, has been delivering these meals for over 20 years. At 90 years old, Kenny continues to brighten the lives of seniors through his volunteer work. He even adds a personal touch to his deliveries by including flowers alongside the meal. His commitment to volunteering has become a family affair, with his children and grandchildren joining him in his efforts. Now, as a resident of The Palace at MorseLife, Kenny continues to serve others through MorseLife’s Homebound Mitzvah Program.

MorseLife relies on the support of volunteers to help deliver approximately 3,000 meals during the High Holidays and Passover, and it wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of people from across the community, including MorseLife residents, staff and volunteers.

To join this effort and deliver meals on September 30th, volunteers must register by calling 561.687.5791 by September 16th. Meal pick-up will be available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at two locations:

MorseLife Memory Care is raising the bar as the first senior community in the U.S. to implement the Happiness Programme, a first-of-its-kind technology created by Social-Ability, that sparks laughter and happiness through interactive light displays, for everyone living with cognitive challenges.

Residents at MorseLife Memory Care can now experience a variety of activities like popping bubbles, playing games, painting, playing the piano and enjoy virtual scenic views from around the world without leaving the comfort of their residence. The 360-degree projector creates engaging environments displayed on surfaces including sheets, ceilings, tables and screens, that help improve physical mobility and cognitive function. “Our residents are actively participating and moving in new, purposeful ways,” shared Savannah Blevins, Memory Care Director.

The program has also helped reduce falls by keeping residents engaged and less likely to wander. Surveys show that participants experience improvements in social, physical, and cognitive well-being, along with reduced stress.

“MorseLife Memory Care leads with innovative programs that significantly impact the lives of seniors with memory disorders,” said Keith Myers, President and CEO.

Residents also enjoy music and art therapy, lectures, fitness classes, and more, all in a luxury setting with restaurant-style dining and private rooms.

April is National Volunteer Month, and many of our residents know Deborah Zangara who has volunteered at The Tradition for 15 years beginning when she visited West Palm Beach as a snowbird and continuing after moving to Florida permanently this year.

“I first heard about MorseLife from a neighbor who used to volunteer,” Deborah recalls. “I worked once a week the first year and just kept adding days. I now volunteer from 9-5, five days a week.”

On a typical Monday, Deborah can be found in the art room, first preparing it with the tablecloth and brushes, then working alongside residents as they enjoy painting.

On most Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Deborah assists with the beading classes. “I work with residents one-on-one in the beading classes and I’ve come to know what colors and shapes they prefer,” she says.

Deborah can also be seen assisting with bingo on Thursdays and preparing for the Shabbat by putting out candles, wine, and challah on Fridays.
“I see many of the same people each day and some have become good friends,” Deborah says. “I like volunteering at MorseLife because the people there are nice and they treat you very well.”

A retired messenger/clerk from a major law firm in Manhattan, Deborah volunteers to help with bingo at her church.
Thank you, Deborah, for your generous spirit and friendly service as a volunteer.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and at MorseLife, we are taking actions to positively impact the futures of those who have Parkinson’s Disease in Palm Beach County. We recently announced the expansion of our pioneering program for people with Parkinson’s Disease, which is now available at the MorseLife campus on an outpatient basis. The expansion of Parkinson’s Therapy at MorseLife broadens access to the effective and evidence-based Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) therapy program. It offers highly individualized Parkinson’s treatment plans led by certified therapists.

Parkinson’s Therapy at MorseLife was initially created to meet the distinctive needs of MorseLife’s long-term care residents who suffered from Parkinson’s Disease or other movement-related disorders. Launched in 2020 the program has positively impacted the lives of many MorseLife patients.

Research conducted by MorseLife reports that program participants have shown significant improvements in daily functioning. Remarkably, 100% of patients report that their balance function has either improved or maintained, while 92% report improved fine motor skills, 95% report improved muscle strength, and 83% report increased success in completing daily care.

Today, MorseLife is setting a new standard treating of Parkinson’s Disease in Palm Beach County by extensively evaluating each patient and providing a highly personalized treatment plan. Parkinson’s Therapy at MorseLife relies on the holistic and innovative program known as Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT). Each plan incorporates evidence-based LSVT strategies for improved movement, speech, and emotional and cognitive changes associated with Parkinson’s and other movement-related disorders.

LSVT therapy involves training the brain to modify or adapt through exercises that lead to functional improvements in everyday movement (LSVT BIG) and speech (LSVT LOUD). Patients learn to exaggerate movement patterns leading to smoother, more significant, and safer movements, and to adjust voice levels while speaking in different settings. The result is comfort, confidence and a better quality of life for patients suffering from Parkinson’s. Certified LSVT therapists administer all LSVT treatments. In addition to treatment, MorseLife offers the unique opportunity for family and caregivers to find the support and education they need through group meetings and counseling sessions.
