UPSIZE! How MorseLife Does Independent Living at The Levin Palace.

We’ve all heard the term downsize. The word was initially coined in the 1980s to mean making a company smaller. Not too long ago, Maria Kondo, in her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, created the “cleaning out for a clearer-mind movement.” Downsizing as a virtue!

Somewhere along the way, “downsizing” became an expectation imposed on people at retirement age. But it felt like a lot of pressure, overwhelming, and it led to a lot of questions; “So we downsize because we’re supposed to, and then what? What will life be like without our familiar home and “our stuff?”

It didn’t seem like fun or something to look forward to.

MorseLife looks at this all a bit differently. Downsizing isn’t about calling 1-800 We Got Junk. Not by a long shot. It’s just the first step to a new life defined by a term we created: UPSIZING.

MorseLife Residents, Staff and Volunteers Package and Deliver High Holiday Meals to Community Seniors in Need

Residents living at The Levin Palace at MorseLife, along with hundreds of community volunteers, took time out of their busy schedules in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah to package and deliver holiday meals to lonely and isolated seniors living throughout Palm Beach County.

As one MorseLife resident expressed, “When you are fortunate enough to have a beautiful life, the only way to express your gratitude is to do something for someone less fortunate.”

Volunteers spent the day delivering a “holiday in a box,” which included meals, wine, soup, challah, apple & honey, and homemade honey cake. Many of the seniors who received meals were lonely widows and widowers or Holocaust survivors accustomed to enjoying the High Holidays around the table with friends and family, but due to life circumstances now find themselves alone.  Volunteers spent time visiting with these individuals and providing needed companionship to help make their holiday brighter.

Residents at MorseLife’s senior living community are encouraged to “live younger,” enjoying food, fun, family, friends, freedom while looking forward to the future. Research indicates that isolation poses health risks, while living life with a glass-half-full mentality adds years to one’s life.  Through the many volunteer programs at MorseLife, residents and volunteers can share their joyfulness, optimism and connectivity with the greater community.

MorseLife’s Homebound Mitzvah Program for Passover and the High Holidays gathers hundreds of community volunteers to assist with pre-delivery meal packaging and/or meal delivery to more than 2,000 seniors throughout Palm Beach County. Volunteer opportunities that benefit community seniors in need, such as the Homebound Mitzvah Program, are made possible through generous donations to the MorseLife Foundation.

Rabbi Alan Sherman Speaks About Jewish Beliefs and Hospice Care

A recent Jewish Journal op-ed discusses Jewish attitudes towards end-of-life hospice care, a service now provided at MorseLife

Rabbi Alan Sherman, a rabbi and chaplain at MorseLife Health System for 36 years, was recently featured in the Jewish Journal where he discusses new end-of-life care services that are now available through MorseLife Health System, an organization with a history of serving the Jewish community.  Palm Beach Hospice and Palliative Care by MorseLife was recently established as a necessary service in the continuum of care at MorseLife and, as Rabbi Sherman confirms, is consistent with the Jewish values surrounding the sanctity of life.
